Italy’s Guglielmo Vicario returns to Tottenham from national duty prematurely
In what has come as a major blow for Guglielmo Vicario, he has returned to Tottenham Hotspur from Italy’s national camp due to picking up flu-like symptoms.
This is according to Football.London, who highlighted that he won’t be able to make his senior debut for I Azzurri this month. Vicario has been called up by Italy’s national team before but has yet to make his senior bow for them.
This month could have been the one where he gets his chance, with Italy facing North Macedonia and Ukraine, respectively, in their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers. But then again, one can’t say that he would have played in either game.
Luciano Spalletti would make it a point to select his strongest possible XI without taking undue risks considering the Italians sit third in their qualification group with 10 points from six matches.
Vicario is one of Spurs’ main men
Ukraine lead them by three points having played one more game, while England have 16 points from six games to their name. Atalanta goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi has been called up as Vicario’s replacement.
It is kind of a good thing for Spurs considering it negates Vicario’s chances of getting injured on international duty. That is, of course, assuming that his flu-like symptoms go away soon and he is able to train properly leading up to Tottenham’s return to the Premier League.
We play Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday (26 November), so there is more than a week for the Italian goalie to recover and get back to full fitness. Otherwise, we do have Fraser Forster and two-time FIFA World Cup finalist Hugo Lloris waiting on the sidelines.
Vicario, 27, has been one of the signings of the summer in the Premier League. Signed from Empoli as a rather unknown quantity to many English football fans, he has proven that he has what it takes to become a dependable successor to Lloris in goal.
