Former Spezia manager Leonardo Semplici says he is ‘pleased’ to see Guglielmo Vicario do well at Tottenham
Former Spezia manager Leonardo Semplici has given his two cents on Guglielmo Vicario’s performances at Tottenham Hotspur.
The 27-year-old was signed from Empoli this summer for a £17.2million fee as the club looked to replace Hugo Lloris between the sticks. Vicario has done just that.
He has been reliable, hardly making mistakes and pulling off important saves at big moments. He seems to be in the prime of his career and for a player of his calibre, the transfer fee now seems like a steal.
That could also be because he didn’t play for one of the most glamorous clubs in Europe and wasn’t at an age where most would consider him a very long-term signing. But Daniel Levy and co. have pulled off a brilliant signing here.
Vicario is the future
Semplici, who last managed Spezia earlier this year, was speaking about various topics majorly related to Italian football. Talking about Vicario, he told TVPlay.it:
“When I made him debut with Cagliari, Vicario’s qualities could already be seen. But I have to say that he surprised me too, evidently they were good at giving him confidence in Empoli, at believing in him without giving weight to his potential mistakes.
“So he made a great journey and earned this chance to go to the Premier League. I would have preferred to see him in an Italian team, but unfortunately the market is open in every sense. What matters is that he is enjoying his adventure in a great team like Tottenham, and I hope he can continue. I’m pleased to see him also in the orbit of the national team.”
If it wasn’t for the brilliant Gianluigi Donnarumma, Vicario could have been Italy’s No. 1. But that isn’t something that Spurs fans should care about too much.
He is getting international call-ups and still not running the risk of getting injured on international duty. We have Fraser Forster and Lloris as two quality back-ups, but Vicario just seems to be on a different level right now.

It is funny to think that one of Vicario’s very best career performances came in a 4-1 Premier League loss to Chelsea. But at least we have a very good goalkeeper between the sticks once again and many would say that he is an upgrade on the Lloris we have seen for the last few years.
