Ange Postecoglou gives verdict on what Rodrigo Bentancur’s best position is at Tottenham Hotspur
There is a lot of excitement surrounding Rodrigo Bentancur’s return from injury, be it at Uruguay or Tottenham Hotspur.
He injured his ACL earlier this year when Antonio Conte was still at the helm. Since then, we have been managed by three different managers, and by the time he fully recovered from the injury, Ange Postecoglou brought in a revolution at Spurs.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg is one of the few who have been left behind during that time, while the likes of Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma have risen to the top. So, where does Rodrigo Bentancur fit in our midfield?
Before the game against Aston Villa on Sunday (26 September), Ange was asked about the former Juventus midfielder’s best position. He replied (h/t Football.London):
“The beauty of him is he can play a couple of different areas. I think he can play as a six, he can play further forward as an eight and he’s even creative. I think he can score goals as well. We were kind of hoping with him, Madders, Pape, Biss and people like Pierre we were well stocked in that midfield area for different kinds of combinations, but obviously that has been disrupted a bit.”
“The key for Rodrigo is to get him back to that level physically and mentally where he feels really comfortable about playing at this level. I don’t think he is far off it from what I’ve seen and again certainly over the next few weeks he will get that opportunity.”
That is similar to what Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa said about Bentancur. He is one of the most complete midfielders around. He can defend, run, pass, and even score goals.
The important thing is getting him back into the team. He will add a different dynamic with his tireless running and runs to the edge of the box.
He can sit at the base of the midfield or partner either Sarr or Bissouma in the middle. The three could also play together to try and eliminate the need for James Maddison as long as he is out injured.
