Tottenham Hotspur linked with a move for Leeds United’s Wilfried Gnonto
Tottenham Hotspur are apparently admirers of Leeds United teenager Wilfried Gnonto. As per CaughtOffside (h/t Calciomercato.it), a swap deal involving Joe Rodon can’t be ruled out.
Gnonto, 19, is one of the most highly-rated players in Italy in that age bracket. It is, hence, a little awkward that he is currently playing in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League last season.
It was clear that he wanted to leave the Yorkshire-based club this summer. Not long after their relegation, he started to abandon training and submitted a transfer request, but to no avail.
The former Inter Milan youth player signed for Leeds from FC Zurich last year on a five-year deal (Transfermarkt), which is why it is clear that Leeds have a big control over his future. It remains to be seen how the player and the club respond if Spurs approach them in the future.
What next for Spurs?
Leeds could want their best players to stay at the club considering they are pushing for a priceless promotion back to the Premier League. They are currently third in the table with 31 points from 16 matches, trailing the top two teams by eight points.
The five-cap Italy international hasn’t set the league alight this season, scoring just once in 11 games across competitions. But the left winger’s pace and dribbling ability make him a nightmare for defenders.
Moreover, he is very young and can only get better with time. A player of his ilk belongs in the Premier League. Both Gnonto and Leeds would know this.
Things will be smoother for Spurs if Leeds don’t get promoted and we make a move for the player at the end of the season. It wouldn’t be a bad idea to test the waters this winter itself.

The player has a €30million price-tag, which isn’t the most audacious figure in the world, especially if there is some room for negotiation. The player’s desire to leave a Championship side (if it didn’t change from the summer) should also help his suitors.
