Ange Postecoglou issues injury update on Tottenham star Rodrigo Bentancur after Aston Villa defeat
Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou has provided an update on Rodrigo Bentancur and his injury sustained during the match against Aston Villa. Contrary to initial concerns about a knee problem, the midfielder is now being assessed for an ankle issue.
Bentancur had an impactful start in the game as Spurs took a 1-0 lead in the first half, but his promising performance saw itself cut short after 32 minutes following a robust challenge from Aston Villa’s Matty Cash. This unfortunate incident marked the Uruguayan’s first start in a Tottenham shirt since recovering from a cruciate ligament injury suffered in February, adding an extra layer of disappointment for both teammates and supporters.
Postecoglou expressed his disappointment at losing Bentancur, highlighting the quality he brought to the game and how integral he was in establishing control.
Speaking to the club’s official website, here is what Postecoglou had to say on Bentancur‘s injury:
“I was disappointed to lose him because he started the game so well, you can see his quality, and that’s a reason we got such a foothold in the game. With him coming back from a serious injury, you are concerned about it. From what I understand, it’s his ankle rather than his knee, but it’s not what we need right now, another injury, but that’s what we’re going through.”
Another injury
Considering Bentancur’s recent return from a serious knee injury, there were initial concerns about a recurrence. However, Postecoglou clarified that the current focus is on the midfielder’s ankle rather than his knee. Despite this distinction, any additional injury setback is unwelcome for Tottenham, particularly given the team’s ongoing challenges with player fitness.
This issue adds to the ever-growing list of injuries at Hotspur Way, increasing the pressure on the manager himself and the bench to keep up the standards that the starting XI, has shown until now.
Our three successive league defeats have made it clear that our bench strength is far from ideal and we need major reshuffling come the January transfer window.
The injury concerns add to Tottenham’s recent struggles, with three consecutive defeats and a slip to fifth place in the Premier League after such an impressive unbeaten streak.
