Borussia Dortmund eye a move for Tottenham left-back Sergio Reguilon
As the January transfer window unfolds, Borussia Dortmund have reportedly set their sights on bolstering their defensive lineup, eyeing a move for Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon.
The Bundesliga giants recognise the need for additional depth in the left-back position, with Edin Terzic, Dortmund’s manager, having only Ramy Bensebaini as the sole natural left-back at his disposal at the Signal Iduna Park.
Reguilon’s return to Tottenham from a loan spell at Manchester United raises questions about his immediate future at the London club. He played only 12 games for the Red Devils and struggled to make a significant impact. Irrespective of that, he’s a good player and would help Die Schwarzgelben to a decent extent. Rudy Galetti talks of their interest via Twitter.
Known for his attacking prowess and an adventurous style of defending, Reguilon surely adds dynamism to the left-back position. However, his time at Manchester United was characterized by limited playing opportunities and questions regarding his adaptation to the team’s playing style. It certainly became evident that Reguilon’s attributes may not have aligned seamlessly with the tactical approach employed by the Red Devils.
Reguilon to Germany?
One of Reguilon’s notable strengths lies in his progressive passing, a quality that could potentially benefit a club like Borussia Dortmund. The Bundesliga side, renowned for its fluid and dynamic football, could leverage Reguilon’s abilities to enhance their offensive contributions from the left-back position.
While the Spanish full-back may face challenges in one-versus-one situations, his counter-pressing style could align well with Dortmund’s high-intensity tactical approach.
On the Tottenham side, manager Ange Postecoglou surely faces a decision regarding Reguilon’s immediate future. Returning from his loan at Manchester United, the Spanish defender may not feature prominently in Postecoglou’s plans for the remainder of the season and another loan might just work best for both parties.
