Brentford now want Tottenham Hotspur star Sergio Reguilon after his short-term spell at Manchester United

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon who just came back from a short-term spell from Manchester United is now wanted by Brentford.

Reguilon only managed to make seven starts in all competitions for Erik ten Hag’s side. His last start was during the disappointing 3-0 home defeat by Bournemouth in December. However, instead of staying with Ange Postecoglou’s team, he is expected to be loaned out again right away.

Such as several other teams including Spurs, Brentford have suffered heavily from injuries, suspensions, and international absences this term. Their leading figures like Bryan Mbeumo, Yoanne Wissa, Ben Mee and notably Ivan Toney have suffered spells out for various reasons.

The Bees are currently in talks with Reguilón whose Spurs contract ends at the end of 2025 and is interested in joining them on loan until June when he hopes to resurrect his career. Brentford are close to the relegation zone and will need to dig in their heels to avoid the drop. Helping them do so will boost Reguilon’s profile.

The Spaniard doesn’t seem to have a place in the Spurs lineup and is largely a backup option. His passing leaves much to be desired, and in today’s game, especially in Ange Postecoglou’s inverted fullback system, that simply won’t cut it. The demands of operating in Ange’s system are quite intense.

While he possesses the necessary athleticism to meet the physical requirements, his injury-prone body would likely succumb to the strain, resulting in him returning to the treatment table sooner rather than later.

Ryan Sessegnon has recently recovered from an injury, while Mickey van de Ven possesses the necessary speed to potentially serve as a left-back alternative. Emerson Royal’s role remains to be seen.

Emerson has shown great consistency when playing on the left side, and with the addition of Radu Dragusin, it seems unlikely that Royal will have to fill in at centre-back.

Considering the injury to Ben Davies, it’s possible that Spurs might decide to keep Reguilon as a backup in case of further injuries. Everything seems to be falling into place for a possible move by Reguilon to West London.
