Joe Cole talks about rebuffing Tottenham for Liverpool after his Chelsea spell

Former Chelsea man Joe Cole recently revealed some interesting behind-the-scenes details about his career choices. While discussing his post-Chelsea move, Cole disclosed that he had a pivotal decision to make between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur.

Appearing on former team-mate John Obi Mikel’s ‘The Obi One’ podcast, here is what Cole said:

“I had a choice between Liverpool or Spurs because Arsenal pulled out and I just couldn’t go to Spurs,”

“I just couldn’t go.”

“It would have made sense, Harry Redknapp was the manager, they had a good team, I lived in London, half my pals are Spurs fans. I just couldn’t do it. My daughter was just born and Liverpool is a great club. It didn’t work for me there but it is a fantastic club, an institution globally.”

The decision-making process was not solely based on footballing considerations but also had personal and emotional aspects. The idea of joining Tottenham, despite the seemingly logical fit, clashed with personal sentiments and allegiances, making it a non-starter for the seasoned midfielder.

Joe Cole is one of the most technically gifted players the Premier League has seen.

At that juncture, with a new addition to his family – his daughter had just been born – Cole opted for Liverpool. Reflecting on his choice, he acknowledged Liverpool as a great club. However, despite joining the Anfield side, Cole’s stint there did not unfold as anticipated. He struggled to find his form, making 42 appearances for Liverpool before eventually terminating his contract and making a move to West Ham.

What if?

Moreover, the fact that he also accepted that he was on the decline as a player post his Chelsea days show how self-aware Cole was. He could have enjoyed a stint with the Lilywhites with the likes of Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Jermaine Defoe and and Peter Crouch among others.

In Cole’s case, the decision not to join Spurs wasn’t just about football; it was about loyalty, personal connections, and a sense of belonging that transcended the game itself. There is very little doubt that Tottenham is not on the level of Liverpool when it comes to how big the clubs are, and we cannot blame Cole for taking the decision that he did.
