Fabrizio Ravanelli came close to joining Tottenham Hotspur in 1197
Former Juventus player Fabrizio Ravanelli expresses his regret over not joining Tottenham Hotspur, per Football London (h/t Bitcoin Casinos). The former Italian forward revealed he had options to join Tottenham or Liverpool but turned them down. He said:
After I left Middlesbrough I had two or three possibilities – Liverpool and Tottenham in England, one possibility in France with Marseille. Possibly I was wrong, because if I went back my decision would change. I would stay in England and not go to France because England was fantastic football and is now the best football in the world. It was a very big mistake I made when I left England.”
Ravanelli left for France to play with Marseille after Middlesbrough. The star had a fantastic stint with the Old Lady. He won the UEFA Champions League (1995/96), the UEFA Cup (1992/93), the Italian Championship (1994/95) and the Italian Super Cup (1995/96).
He formed a formidable attacking partnership with many Juventus legends like Roberto Baggio, Gianluca Vialli, Paolo Di Canio, Pierluigi Casiraghi, Andreas Möller, and Alessandro Del Piero.
The career path that he took
Fabrizio Ravanelli reveals that he chose Middlesbrough for the then Boro manager Bryan Robson, whom he respects a lot. A colourful few years at Turin was followed by an underwhelming spell for the “White Feather” at Middlesbrough. The club faced relegation immediately.
Ravanelli was a crucial figure for Italy in the World Cup of 1998 and the star needed a big club to secure his position in the Italian World Cup squad. He eventually chose Ligue 1 outfit Marseille, while turning down offers from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.
Unfortunately for him, the career graph never saw a significant upward graph after that. He did manage to win another Scudetto, this time with Lazio, apart from Coppa Italia and Supercopa Italiana. Ravanelli visited England once again to join Derby County as a free agent.
