Alberto Gilardino admits benching Tottenham loanee Djed Spence was only tactical
Genoa manager Alberto Gilardino explains the reason behind the substitution on Tottenham Hotspur loanee Djed Spence, insisting that it wasn’t due to poor performance, per HITC (H/T Tutto Mercato Web). The former Leeds player has found a new life at Genoa, starting both games since arrival.
Spence did play the entire game on his debut but his second game was cut short at half time. Genoa boss substituted him for Caleb Ekuban, who ultimately scored the winner for the Serie A outfit. Gilardino emphasized the switch was purely tactical. Apart from Spence, Morten Thorsby was also substituted. He said:
“Both Spence and Thorsby were not changed because they were working badly but it was my desire to change tactically. He has great dribbling quality and when he has the chance to attack a space he must do it with vehemence and speed. It takes patience and calm with this player who has great qualities. Thorsby is a great professional, they weren’t doing badly but it was a tactical change.
The manager’s words were a reassurance that he values Djed Spence’s abilities and we can see more of him for Genoa in the upcoming matches.
Djed Spence’s long-route to stability
The young England man could never find a cemented spot at his parent club. He served loan stints at Rennes and Leeds while being a Spurs player. Immense competition within the squad cast him further away from Ange Postecoglou’s plans.
The 23-year-old was sent to Genoa on loan in exchange for Radu Dragusin’s permanent move the other way. The Genoa boss gave Spence a much-needed start. However, there’s been a switch from his natural position.

Spence now plays on the left side of the midfield despite being a natural right-back. His versatility is highlighted by this switch. Alberto Gilardino will be testing Djed Spence further and it looks like the English international can finally put his team switches to rest.
