Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich were among the unlucky bunch as multiple clubs missed out on 18-year-old striker
As reported by Sebastien Denis (h/t Footbal.London), Tottenham Hotspur and Bayern Munich have both missed the opportunity to sign impressive 18-year-old striker, Victor Orakpo. The Nigerian has now signed a three-year deal to stay with OGC Nice, which is coincidentally owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS.
For those of you who don’t know INEOS also has a minority stake in Manchester United and as soon as the deal gets ratified, Ratcliffe and his team will be taking control of the club’s sporting side.
Newcastle and Tottenham were also interested in signing a deal for the 18-year-old. Orakpo is currently expected to be joining the team’s academy to help him adjust to their brand of football.
However, the Nigerian national’s ceiling is very high, so it will not come as a surprise if he soon begins to make first-team appearances for the French club. However, this will not hurt Tottenham as Orakpo was anyways a long-term bet.
Moreover, the team’s current centre-forward has burst onto the scene and has put together a string of good performances. Richarlison has scored seven goals for the Spurs during his last seven outings. He has been pivotal towards helping the team stay afloat in the absence of Son Heung-min.
If he can keep this up, Tottenham themselves will hand him a sizeable extension. The Lilywhites are currently fourth in the Premier League standings. They are eight points behind league leaders Liverpool if Postecoglou can rally his team they just might pull off the impossible.
