Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has the highest number of away assists in the PL this season
According to Squawka’s tweet on X, no other player in Europe’s Top-5 league has more league assists away from home than Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison.
Maddison, at the age of 27, has been a standout performer for Ange Postecoglou‘s team this season, contributing three goals and seven assists, which have been instrumental in helping Spurs secure a fourth-place position in the table. Interestingly, six out of his seven assists have come in away matches, setting him apart from other play-makers clinging to home comforts.
There has been a significant amount of support for his inclusion in the England squad for the upcoming European Championships in Germany. There is enough evidence to argue that he should not only be a part of the team, but also a starting position.
Maddison is undoubtedly not just an ordinary player. Interestingly, the phrase ‘all-round, ball-winning workhorse’ can be seen as a rather accurate portrayal of his abilities. His accuracy may be questioned, as his ball-winning and work rate are not the aspects of his game that he is widely recognized for. He puts in a lot of effort and successfully retrieves the ball quite often. In fact, he was among the top 25 players in the league last season when it came to winning back possession in the attacking third for teams that ended up in the lower half of the table.
Spurs have a unique advantage with the absence of additional cup competitions. With a keen eye on the league, the team can fully devote themselves to earning vital points and making their way up the Premier League standings. In this context, Maddison’s focus on optimism takes on even greater importance, highlighting the mental fortitude needed to navigate a league campaign with success.
Throughout the past three seasons, Son has taken on the role of Spurs’ corner taker. While his delivery is solid, his focus has shifted towards becoming a set-piece taker, rather than being solely known for his prowess in that aspect of the game. It’s interesting to note that Pedro Porro took charge of corner duties towards the end of last season after joining in January.
This indicates that there may have been individuals within the club who believed that there was room for improvement in Son’s performance. Therefore, signing Maddison could potentially bring about an even greater upgrade. On the other hand, Son’s ability to score from direct free-kicks may not be the solution to Tottenham’s long-term issues. Maddison has consistently demonstrated his ability to get the job done.
