Conte praises support from Tottenham honcho Daniel Levy and the team for forcing him to take medical leave
Antonio Conte reflects on his Tottenham Hotspur days to thank Daniel Levy and the support staff for letting him stay in Italy for recovery, per The Telegraph (subscription required). Conte had to undergo gallbladder removal surgery in February 2023.
The manager revealed that he returned to work a week after the surgery but was forced to take another four weeks off work. The former Tottenham Hotspur head coach said:
“It was an important period with the Champions League, the FA Cup and with the league. I preferred to come back quickly, but then I understood it was really soon. It was Daniel Levy who pushed me to go home and recover again.”
It is learned that Daniel Levy urged Conte to stay back home after a narrow 1-0 away loss against AC Milan. Conte also emphasized the support he received from the entire during testing times.
Breaking down the downfall
Antonio Conte’s arrival gave fans a new hope. He took over the control from Nuno Espirito Santo in November 2021 when the club was eighth on the league table. He led the team to a fine campaign, helping them secure a Champions League spot for the next (2022/23) season.
However, that’s all the club got from that season. He even urged the staff not to be happy over securing a UCL spot. The following season saw Tottenham top the group stage table. They eventually lost against AC Milan in the round of 16.
A similar fate awaited them in The FA Cup as they were hammered by underdogs Sheffield United. Conte was evidently frustrated with his team but it was the 3-3 draw against bottom-placed Southampton that irked the former Inter boss.
