Tottenham Hotspur youth product Brooklyn Lyons-Foster is on his way to HJK Helsinki
Tottenham Hotspur have reached an agreement with HJK Helsinki for the transfer of their academy product Brooklyn Lyons-Foster. The news was shared by Tottenham Hotspur Academy’s Twitter handle.
Brooklyn rose through the academy ranks to become one of the most recognised stars of Tottenham’s Development Squad. The 23-year-old also captained the club’s Premier League 2 side on several occasions. The Tottenham Hotspur senior team had him on the teamsheet on just two occasions during the 2021/22 campaign.
However, the defender remained as an unused substitute in both instances. Despite being a part of the Tottenham academy since childhood, the London-born defender could never break into the senior team. The club often preferred new signings over academy products, especially in the recent past.
The 23-year-old will be hoping for some serious football after signing with the Finnish club. The club wished him well via their official website.
The crowded backline
The exit of the academy defender Brooklyn Lyons-Foster sheds light on a reader topic. Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive lineup is well-stacked, for good or bad. The positive side is that Ange Postecoglou will never face issues like lack of availability as he did a few months ago.
The negative side, especially from the players’ perspective is the lack of playing time. The Aussie manager secured Radu Dragusin from Genoa this January. However, the strong and young defender hasn’t started a game yet.
From being arguably the most prominent player at Genoa to a bench warmer at Spurs, Ange might be fiddling with the 22-year-old’s morale. It is Pedro Porro, Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven and Destiny Udogie who enjoy priority in guarding Tottenham’s defence.

Apart from Radu Dragusin, there are also versatile options like Ben Davies and Emerson Royale. The duo were instrumental in helping Ange hold the fort during Romero and Micky’s absence. The Tottenham gaffer must devise a new way to give fair chance to all his players, especially the defenders.
