Jermain Defoe mistook Drake for Aaron Lennon before moving to Canada
Former Tottenham Hotspur superstar Jermain Defoe reveals how he mistook Canadian rapper Drake for teammate Aaron Lennon, per The Mirror. The 41-year-old was spilling beans ahead of his documentary release. Reminiscing the funny incident, Defoe said:
“I remember being out for dinner with my cousin and got a phone call, said ‘hello, who’s this’, and he said ‘It’s Drake’. I thought he was winding me up! I actually thought it was Aaron Lennon, I thought ‘Wow your Canadian accent is unbelievable. But no, it was Drake. We had a conversation and I remember he spoke about Toronto the city, what it’s like, the people, the football club, and that was it. I decided to sign and I loved it.”
The light-hearted incident took place right before the England forward decided to join the MLS side Toronto FC. Defoe also said that he hopes Drake watches the documentary that will highlight the footballer’s journey from Senrab to Rangers.
The spark that never caught fire
Before Messi and Ronaldo’s name was echoed through the halls of greatness, it was Jermain Defoe who was tipped to rule the football world. The youngster was backed by great managers including Harry Redknapp, who admits to having ‘maybe’ broken a few rules to reunite with him.
However, the former Spurs star couldn’t quite latch on to his fame. His senior career spanned nearly around 23 years but the striker kept moving around quite a bit.
North London was where he spent most of his career. Jermain Defoe is ranked 9th in player with most appearances for Tottenham. He is also the fourth-highest goal-scorer in the history of the club.
