Hugo Lloris reflects on the legacy left by him at Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham Hotspur‘s long-term key player and captain Hugo Lloris emotionally bid farewell citing his earlier days, per The Athletic (subscription required). The French shot-stopper said:
“(The goodbye) was the best way to end the chapter. It shows that you belong to the history of the club and you made a stamp on it through your career. The game is different; you never remember your last. I will always remember my first game, but the last doesn’t matter to me. What is important is that we shake hands with respect. Me and my family will always be members of Tottenham.”
Hugo Lloris played his first game for Tottenham on 20 September 2012 in a UEFA Europa League match. From there, he went on to guard the North Londoners’ goals for nearly 12 seasons. The Frenchman also spent most of his Spurs stint as the club captain.
The 37-year-old showed signs of slowing down by the latter half of last season under Antonio Conte’s reign. He slowly became second-fiddle and Ange’s arrival sealed the deal for the Frenchman.
The lasting legacy
Ange Postecoglou signed Guglielmo Vocario to don the numero uno role for the Lilywhites. Needless to say, the Italian goalie did a fine job at his new position. Vicario’s prowess earned him nominations for the ‘Save of the Month’ five times in a row.
This feat made it evident that finding Hugo Lloris’ replacement was the ideal choice made by the club’s new boss. Lloris continued to train with the first team and attend team meetings under the former Celtic gaffer’s guidance.
The France international was forced to spend the 2023/24 season at Spurs after failing to find potential clubs during the summer window. However, he has now found a new home in Los Angeles with LAFC.
