Hugo Lloris says Daniel Levy has always worked in the club’s best interest
Tottenham Hotspur cult hero Hugo Lloris backs club chairman Daniel Levy for what he has done for the club, per The Athletic (subscription required). The France shot-stopper was speaking to the media ahead of his departure from the club.
Lloris spent nearly 12 seasons at the club, most of it as a captain. Only a few know the club inside out as the 37-year-old does. A series of bad performances led to frustrated fans chanting ‘Levy Out’ during the last season. However, Lloris backed the chairman by saying:
“It’s easy from outside or as a player to say (Levy) should do this or do that. The reality is different. When you’re at the top of the club, you’re always interested in trying to make the best decisions.”
Lloris went on to appreciate Tottenham’s presence in the past few transfer windows. He believes the club is in a strong position and Daniel Levy deserves the credit.
Levy and Tottenham go way back
Daniel Levy brought stakes at the North London club in 2001. The feat was achieved after Alan Sugar, then Chairman of the club, shot down Levy’s offer twice. Tottenham fans had huge hopes for Levy as they did not quite appreciate Alan Sugar’s way of operations.
Sugar’s way of dealing with the club from more of a business point of view did not sit well with the Spurs faithful. Levy took charge in 2001. The club saw all highs and lows under his reign. However, the fans wanted results and entertainment.
Balloons quoting ‘Levy Out’ were seen at home during the last season, emphasising fans’ growing frustration. The smart businessman in Levy appointed Ange Postecoglou, who brought and is bringing significant changes to the club.
