Gold says Cristian Romero was considering leaving Tottenham under Conte’s reign

Football London journalist Alasdair Gold says Cristian Romero was contemplating an exit from Tottenham under Antonio Conte. The journalist, who keeps a close watch on Tottenham Hotspur News, however, shared this via his Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham Podcast. He said:

“We spoke about Conte earlier and the way the team was. I felt that Romero was potentially heading towards an exit at some point. I feel like he wasn’t happy at the club. This guy is a World Cup winner and I felt like there was a feeling there of ‘I could be doing better than this.”

Gold recalled the incident while talking about Cristian Romero’s match-deciding goal against Crystal Palace. The journo was quick to recall the centre-back’s state of mind then versus now. Romero was signed in 2021 as a loanee from Atalanta.

Nuno Espirito Santo was the Tottenham manager at that time. However, it was Antonio Conte who waved the green flag to make the Argentine stopper’s move permanent in north London.

What changed for Cristian Romero under Ange?

Learning about Romero’s thoughts about leaving the club from Alasdair Gold has left the fans wondering the reason behind it. He never lacked playing time, he was a crucial figure at the club and also one of the favourites to lead the team. When all looks fine, what could have urged him to force an exit?

Well, the answer is pretty simple if one actually thinks about it. Cristian Romero is a World Cup winner with Argentina. That feat puts him among one of the most elite footballers in the world. The player who collected the most coveted trophy in the world of football had to settle with an eighth place in the domestic competition and zero club-level trophies.

It is difficult for someone at that level to come to terms with the sorry state of life after the World Cup. However, Romero seems to enjoy life under Ange Postecoglou. Even though the Lilywhites aren’t favourites to win the trophy, they are one of the fiercest teams in the Premier League right now.
