Tottenham ace Djed Spence opens up about his chances of playing for Jamaica

Tottenham Hotspur loanee Djed Spence says he has previously considered playing for Jamaica at the international level, according to The Athletic (subscription required). He featured for England’s U21 side on a couple of occasions but is also eligible to play for Jamaica through descendancy.

Djed Spence was born in London, making him eligible to play for England by birth. However, he can also opt to play for Jamaica, from where his parents belong. The right-back has played a few games for The Three Lions U21 in UEFA European Under-21 Championship Qualifying and International Friendlies.

He moved to Genoa for more playing time in January. When asked about new challenges and thus, the upcoming Copa America tournament, where he could be tempted to feature for Jamaica, the 23-year-old said:

“It’s entered my mind before, but I want to play for England on the biggest stage. I’m capable of doing so. Jamaica could be an option but my focus is on England and I want to get there and play with the best and be the best. I can still get there. It’s one of my dreams. I mean, who wouldn’t want to represent their country?”

Multiple options, limited game time

Djed Spence’s situation would make the Tottenham fans feel for him. A series of injuries affected the youngster’s importance within north London, and he has never earned a call-up to the England senior team.

He moved to Genoa when Radu Dragusin shifted the other way, but things haven’t changed much for him. The wingback did accumulate a considerable amount of playing time in his first three Serie A games. However, he has been relegated to the bench and limited playing time lately.

The Euro 2024 is around the corner and is least likely for the Tottenham loanee to earn a call-up. He has a better chance of switching sides and joining Jamaica’s 2024 Copa America campaign, should he wish to represent an international side.
