Tottenham star Guglielmo Vicario said he was focused on his goals rather than being under pressure
As reported by ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur numero uno Guglielmo Vicario opens up about filling Hugo Lloris’ shoes at the club. The former Serie A shot-stopper was Ange Postecoglou’s first signing for the north London club. When asked if he felt any pressure replacing someone like Lloris at the club, Vicario said:
“It is not about overthinking who was before you. I think pressure is everywhere in football so you don’t have to overthink and just concentrate on what you have to do day by day.”
The former Empoli man also added Hugo Lloris’ contribution in helping him settle at his new club. Vicario explained how Lloris provided him with valuable advice and was often a ‘help’ rather than a hindrance. Lloris stayed at Tottenham despite interest from multiple clubs during the previous transfer window.
Even though he wasn’t promised a place in the squad, Ange allowed the former Tottenham captain to train with the team and attend team meetings. The Frenchman left the club in January to join MLS side LAFC.
Ange Postecoglou’s gamble
The Aussie manager was forced to look for a new leader and a goalkeeper after Hugo Lloris expressed his interest in leaving the club last June. The club were eyeing numerous ‘big names’ but Ange insisted on getting Vicario from Empoli.
Many seemed unconvinced with the signing as Empoli barely finished above the relegation zone and Vicario could manage not more than seven clean sheets from the season. Moreover, the Italian goalie didn’t make his top-tier debut until April 2021.
On the other hand, Hugo Lloris was a legend who remained with the club for eleven seasons. The Frenchman was lauded as one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the sport and a World Cup-winning captain.
