Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou rubbishes ‘revenge’ talks for Matty Cash’s challenge on Rodrigo Bentancur

Recently, there has been a lot of talk around Matty Cash’s tackle of Rodrigo Bentancur which resulted in a serious injury for the Tottenham Hotspur player. Fans have been making speculations about revenge and inciting Spurs players to give him a taste of his own medicine.

Aston Villa, have been on top of their game and is currently narrowly beating Spurs to be a qualifying team for the UEFA Champions League as they sit fourth in the Premier League table. Five teams may qualify this season based on co-efficient rankings but if the traditional four-teams format continues, Tottenham will have reason to have a foul taste in their mouth for Villa and Cash in general.

Speaking about the situation, as quoted by Football. London, Ange Postecoglou laughed off revenge talks for Matty Cash’s horrendous tackle on Rodrigo Bentancur

“I wouldn’t place sole ownership on the fans, it seems like you’re fuelling that a bit yourselves! No interest mate. For us, the challenge is to face a really good team with really strong home form and beyond that you’d be surprised about how little that stuff infiltrates what we do and sort of our motivations for a game of football.”

“If anything, they’re the type of things where you hope that as you mature and develop as a team become less and less important or a focus. When you’re clutching at those kinds of things, you’re losing sense of what’s important. What’s important for us is to be at our best against a very good football team and try to get a result.”

Focus on the game, mate!

Postecoglou has claimed that Tottenham is set on facing a good team in strong form because the focus is winning. Instead of taking revenge, their aim is to qualify for UEFA Champions League. Further, he knows that the team is mature enough to not dwell on these kind of things. Postecoglou has said multiple times that Spurs now know their priorities and have a sense of what is important.

Obviously, at this moment in time, this feels like an unimportant thing to Tottenham. The boys are trained to not let such ideas infiltrate them and to focus on things which will improve their gameplay. He wants the team to improve and play to the best of their potential. Their focus should be football, which is what the manager has been focusing on.

Matty Cash needs to retrospectively think about his aggressive gameplay. However, Tottenham seems to have shifted their focus from clutching on his aggression to their own strategies of the sport. Bentancur is back and doing well. That’s all that matters at the moment.
