Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou shows support for his players amidst mental health discussions
In a recent interview with ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur star Richarlison showed his vulnerable side, discussing his struggle with mental health issues and prolonged depression, and how therapy saved his life when he hit rock bottom. The interview was emotional and revealed a completely different aspect of the player.
It was a brave decision for him to open up about his journey and advocate for mental health support. Additionally, it helped initiate a conversation about the personal and professional challenges faced by players as they navigate the world of sports. The pressures of fame, dealing with losses, and even managing victories are often overlooked aspects of their lives. However, they are issues that should not be taken lightly.
The Spurs boss was also all praises for Richarlison because he thought making the struggle public was very brave. Furthermore, it helped him emphasise that support was avaialble for players whenever they needed it because physical health was as important as mental health.
Ange about Richarlison:
It is no secret that Postecoglou is very involved in the lives of his player. As a result, when he held a press conference recently, he was asked to speak about Richarlison. Additionally, he was also asked whether he knew that the player wanted to end his football career. While Ange could praise him for opening up, he was reluctant to give details.
“From my perspective, as I’ve always said, what I try to do with all the players is provide an environment where they feel comfortable and safe enough to seek any help they do need. Whether that’s Richy or other players that have sought or needed help this year, what I’ve tried to do in my role is steer them towards that.

After, Ange Postecoglou also added that while it was an important interview, it did not have much of an impact in the club. The suggestion was that a lot of these things have been going on for a while, but they don’t seep into the public arena.
“It’s not that uncommon. It’s not, not in my experience. They’re human beings. But for the most part it’s always dealt with behind closed doors,” he said. “That’s why it’s always really difficult for your guys (the media) to do your job because you never have all the information and you never will.
“There is so much that goes on at football clubs… if you could just expand that out to your life and just treat a football club like any other industry, you’ll realise that in every other industry you’ve got people struggling with things. Football is no different but we’ve got to put a strong curtain up and it all gets hidden behind there.
