Tottenham chase Branthwaite as they seek a solution to defensive woes

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a summer move for Everton’s rising defender Jarrad Branthwaite. While the North Londoners are linked with multiple defenders for a potential move this summer, the 21-year-old is one of the marquee targets for the upcoming summer window.

The Lilywhites have a need to recruit a new central defender this summer owing to a lack of quality backups in the position. To put it into context, Ange Postecoglou had to use full-backs at the heart of defence owing to injuries and suspensions this season. While Daniel Levy & Co. brought Radu Dragusin in a £26.7 million (€31 million) deal from Genoa after the Romanian international chose to join Tottenham over Bayern Munich, there is a high likelihood that we will see one, maybe two, new faces in the central defensive position this summer.

While Spurs hold a strong interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, his services are eyed by Manchester United, Bayern Munich as well as Chelsea, which makes up for an intense off-the-field battle for his services. The suitors depict the quality Jarrad possesses, and that would not come cheap as Everton are looking for a minimum of £70 million to sell their star man.

Everton are citing the example of Wesley Fofana and his £75 million move from Leicester City to Chelsea, per Teamtalk. They believe that Branthwaite is as good as Fofana and has the potential to become better than the Chelsea defender.

While Branthwaite has shown glimpses of possessing world-class talent, a fee this hefty would rule Tottenham out of the running. Spurs are in the process of aiming towards a project with a self-sustaining financial model; they cannot pay these hefty fees for the services of Branthwaite or anyone else as of now.
