Release clause hurdle as Romano casts doubt on Tottenham’s Olmo pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur have expressed interest in Spanish creative midfielder Dani Olmo over the past few weeks as they look to add creative depth to the squad this summer. The North Londoners would like to lure away the 25-year-old from RB Leipzig, especially if they don’t face significant competition for his services in the summer window, per GIVEMESPORT.

The Lilywhites have been enjoying distant progress this season since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the season, as they battle with Unai Emery’s Aston Villa in a bid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League’s top four

Olmo has established himself as one of Europe’s top offensive midfielders in recent seasons.

Any potential arrival of Dani Olmo to North London would result in added competition for James Maddison in the attacking midfield role. Nevertheless, the 27-year-old has had his injury concerns throughout the ongoing season. The addition of Olmo will not just be a backup figure, as his stats eclipse those of the former Leicester City midfielder in the final third in almost every particular.

Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano insists that while the Lilywhites, like the La Masia graduate, any potential move for his services would be difficult, as the Red Bull-owned club isn’t interested in sitting down on the negotiation table as they would want the whole release clause paid. Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the Italian said:

“Yes, there’s a chance, but at the moment, I’m told that he’s still in initial meetings with his agents around Europe. He’s also not in advanced negotiations or talks because he has a release clause in his contract worth around €60 million (£51 million), so the price is already there. We know that Leipzig doesn’t like to negotiate. You have to pay the clause or nothing, like what happened, for example, with Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool last summer. So, I think they’re already all well-informed about the situation of Olmo, but at the moment, I’m not aware of anything advanced in terms of contacts.”

While that price is a premium fee, any potential acquisition of the Spaniard would amount to a marquee addition to the Spurs roster.
