Levy’s bargain hunt? Versatile Ben Johnson eyed as free transfer option by Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with a move for Ben Johnson, who’d have to swiftly win over the Spurs faithful owing to his West Ham background, believes former goalkeeper at White Hart Lane, Paul Robinson.

The North Londoners were linked with a move for the 24-year-old, as reported by TeamTalk on April 15, suggesting the Lilywhites move for the West Ham full-back, whose contract at the London Stadium is due at the conclusion of the ongoing season.

Could Ben Johnson bolster Tottenham’s defence on a free transfer?

Johnson has only made four starts for the Hammers this season; however, his appearances have shown his versatile profile as he has played on the flanks as well as in the midfielder position for David Moyes.

That adaptability and versatility make ex-Tottenham goalkeeper Robinson believe he could strengthen the club’s roster, if not the starting eleven; however, he insists that the rivalry between the two London-based clubs would give him hardly any margin for error.

“I think it’s an area that Tottenham will certainly look to address this summer in the full-back areas,” Robinson said exclusively to Tottenham News.

“I think the thing with Ben Johnson is that he’s versatile; he can play both right-back and left-back, but if you put him into the Tottenham squad now with a fully fit Pedro Porro and a fully fit Destiny Udogie, he doesn’t play.

“I’m not so sure he takes Spurs to the next level where they want to get to, and a deal between Spurs and West Ham may not go down too well with the fans. He’d have to hit the ground running to win a lot of the supporters over.

“I think he’d be a good addition to the squad, put it that way, but I don’t think he’d have an immediate impact on the starting XI.

Tottenham do need full-back reinforcement, especially when the likes of Pedro Porro and Destiny Udogie serve on the sidelines. Their back-ups, i.e., Emerson Royal and Ben Davies, have both had to fill in at the heart of the defense at some point this season.

Signing a versatile profile like Johnson would add depth to multiple positions on the Ange Postecoglou roster. Moreover, his free availability means that Daniel Levy can prioritize marquee singing in other places in the squad.

It is to be seen where this rumor goes; however, it will be interesting to see if the rivalry between the clubs could be a cause for concern.
