Modric speaks on his time at Tottenham and his path from the N17 to Bernabéu
Tottenham Hotspur produced a phenomenon of a midfielder in Luka Modric, and while ruling the football world, he expresses his eternal gratitude to the club and one man in particular, Harry Redknapp.
The North Londoners signed the now-38-year-old midfield maestro from Dinamo Zagreb in 2008. He arrived at White Hart Lane with a big reputation; however, things didn’t start as smoothly as he would have liked. The Lilywhites picked up just a couple of points in the first eight league games of the 2008–09 season under Juande Ramos.
Daniel Levy called quits with Ramos and brought in Harry Redknapp from Portsmouth, and he instantly got the best out of Luka Modric and everyone in the squad.
“Forever Grateful” – Luka Modric hails Redknapp’s coaching and humanity at Tottenham
Modric developed into one of the best midfielders in the Premier League at Tottenham, which earned him a move to the prestigious Real Madrid in 2012. He has not looked back since, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in the modern era.
The Croat has won five Champions Leagues during his time at Santiago Bernabeu and is still going strong despite his aching 38-year-old age.
Modric was speaking about his journey and his time at Tottenham in particular. He went on to credit Harry Redknapp for helping to develop him into the player he is today. Luka Modric insists that Redknapp helped him, and Spurs, under his tutelage, played the best football in the Premier League.
The Real Madrid icon, in an interview with Optus Sport, said:
“I can only say great things about Harry [Redknapp]. He is a great coach but what impressed me even more is how he is as a person – a phenomenal man. He helped me a lot while I was at Tottenham until I left. I am forever grateful and I have happy memories working with him.”
”To have someone who really believes in you, who sees your potential, that helps. I needed that, especially after my initial struggles. We definitely played the most beautiful football in England.”
