Alasdair Gold says Tottenham will look to sign Atalanta’s Ederson

Tottenham’s pursuit of a defensive midfielder is getting intriguing, especially with the insights from Alasdair Gold suggesting a data-driven approach. The club’s scouting network is clearly looking beyond the obvious names, aiming to unearth a gem who might not be on everyone’s radar but ticks all the right boxes when it comes to analytics.

While names like Conor Gallagher and Teun Koopmeiners have been floating around, Ederson from Atalanta emerges as a compelling option. At 24, he not only brings defensive solidity but also the potential for long-term commitment. This could be crucial, especially with uncertainties surrounding the futures of Tanguy Ndombele and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Here is what he had to say on the Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham podcast:

“Number six is a more difficult one really. In terms of I feel like a number six will be a real data signing, someone who can do a bit of everything. They’ve been heavily linked with Ederson and it’s a funny one with him because depending on who you speak to whether he’s a natural number six or not. I’ll say Ederson for that role for now, but I feel like maybe that number six role will be more of a data-based one that people are surprised by and it comes from left field, we will see.”

Pape Matar Sarr and James Maddison seem to be fitting well into the club’s future plans, and Rodrigo Bentancur will be eager to bounce back from an injury-hit spell. Meanwhile, Yves Bissouma’s inconsistent performances lately could be a deciding factor in the pursuit of a new midfielder like Ederson.

What’s particularly interesting is Gold’s mention of a potential “left-field” signing. It hints at Tottenham’s willingness to innovate in their recruitment strategy, possibly bypassing traditional scouting methods in favour of advanced analytics. This approach could be a game-changer, allowing Spurs to identify players who not only fit the tactical blueprint but also offer value for money.

Ederson’s profile suggests versatility, a key attribute for a modern defensive midfielder. His adaptability could provide tactical flexibility, allowing the team to adjust seamlessly during matches.

In any case, it is best if the recruitment team solely does their job without the interference of the management. Recent revelations put out that Liverpool wanted to sign Christopher Nkunku but the manager pushed for Darwin Nunez. We all know how that’s turned out.
