Richarlison vs. Son – Who starts up front for Spurs in the North London Derby?

Tottenham Hotspur are set to face Arsenal this weekend as we prepare for a highly anticipated North London Derby, and the headlines have already started printing around the predictions and potential line-ups. One of those is the Gold and Guest Tottenham podcast, which debates whether Richarlison should start against the Gunners and, if so, where that leaves Son.

The Lilywhites come into the game on the back of a horrendous game against Newcastle United, as Eddie Howe’s side absolutely thrashed Spurs in what was the worst performance since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the club. While the Lilywhites would like to put that behind and focus on what is next, in some positives, the club is set to welcome back Richarlison going into the weekend’s fixture.

Richarlison has been on the sidelines for a while now, and having him back could be pivotal to Spurs ending of the season. He has been a formidable presence up front this season, and the Brazilian not only poses a physical threat but also demonstrates an intuitive sense of positioning on the field.

However, the question is, does he come back into the room straight away? The Lilywhites skipper, Son Heung Min, has done a brilliant job upfront, so does Ange push him back to the left flank to reintegrate Richy into the starting eleven?

Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest argue the probable on the Gold and Guest Tottenham podcast, saying:

“And you know, if he’s fit, does he start? Put Son back on the left.”

“I think that would be a big ask of him. I mean, he hasn’t started a game in what, two months? That would be a big kind of thing to throw him into from the start.”

“But then it depends on where he was fitness-wise, I guess, at the start of the two weeks. If they’ve had two weeks to absolutely get his fitness up, then maybe. Who would you take out?”

“It’s really difficult because the two wingers have played really well in recent games until essentially, yeah, pretty much the Newcastle games. Spurs look so kind of devoid of an ability to break through that it kind of maybe has painted a picture over the previous games when we were kind of raving about what Verna was doing, raving about what Johnson was doing. So, if Richarlison’s fit, let’s say was, which I don’t know whether he will be, and don’t forget, Sonny did start up front against Arsenal and scored twice.”

“Did he have something like 14 or 18 touches and score two goals? I think he barely did…”

While Richy played a brilliant game against Arsenal last time around, Son has consistently been putting in performances in the number nine position. It is to be seen who Ange prefers in the role at the weekend, as all roads lead to NLD for the next few days.
