Learning curve continues as Tottenham show fight but Arsenal clinch win

Tottenham Hotspur faced Arsenal earlier today, and while the Lilywhites couldn’t come through with the victory against the North London neighbours, there were ample positives to take from the performance including that of Cristian Romero’s performance.

Arsenal took the three points as the Gunners kept their bid for the Premier League title alive while it was another learning performance for Ange Postecoglou’s top-four chasing side.

It was a first-half dominance from Mikel Arteta’s Gunners with three first-half goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg (OG), Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz found themselves on target. The Lilywhites duo Cristian Romero and Son Heung-min (pen) were quick to respond in the second half; however, the fightback was too little, too late after the first-half damage.

Tottenham’s central defender Cristian Romero did much more than a goal. His display today showed his qualities and showcased the reasons behind his reputation as one of the best defenders in the Premiership.

The Argentine World Cup winner was always on the front foot as he never stopped running and working hard off the ball. He proved to be causing constant problems for the visitors throughout the ninety minutes. The 26-year-old came close to finding the net a couple of times in the first half, one with a header that hit the post and that was followed by another effort that sailed just over the bar.

Romero ensured that Tottenham maintain a relentless press which extended beyond his own area, and it was this tenacity that paid off in the second half. Romer capitalizing on a poor clearance by David Raya, found himself on the edge of the box and he slotted the ball home to bring Spurs back into the game.

This was backed by the statistics on Sofascore. Romero’s statistics showed his exemplary performance:
