Three straight losses spark talk of major summer overhaul at Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur enjoyed a superb first season under Ange Postecoglou; however, losing their last three matches has thrown their Champions League qualification hopes into serious jeopardy. It’s not the defeats per se; it’s the manner of those defeats that hurts.

The North Londoners were outclassed in all departments by Newcastle United as Eddie Howe’s side took all three points with a 4-0 win over Tottenham at St. James Park. The woeful performance against the Tyneside-based club was followed by the North London Derby last weekend. While the score line (3-2) indicates a close game, both the Spurs goals came owing to Arsenal mistakes

As the Lilywhites were revamping following their defeat to Arsenal, they lost three points in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge just four days later. This came as a surprise for fans at large, as Chelsea have been having an inconsistent season under Mauricio Pochettino.

With three defeats on the trot, Tottenham and Ange Postecoglou have to start rolling in some tough calls to ensure that such performances do not repeat next season. This may involve buying some new players and selling a bunch of current players. The officials at White Hart Lane have to ensure that the roster at Postecoglou’s disposal suits the way he wants to set up and the football he wants to play.

The Tottenham boss indicated that changes may come this summer in his press conference ahead of tomorrow’s match against Liverpool at Anfield Stadium. The Australian boss, indicating a need for ‘change’ and a major summer overhaul at Tottenham, said (via. Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing):

“We need change. Change has to happen. I’ve got to change this squad; I have to. I’ve got to build a squad that I think can play our football. For that to happen, there have to be exits. We’re going to play and train a certain way. That’s not for everyone.”
