Trophies or development? Postecoglou wants both for rejuvenated Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur as a club have made massive progress since Ange Postecoglou took charge of the club last summer. The North Londoners have gone from one of the struggling Big Six sides to one of the most exciting teams around Europe, something that is a massive feat in such a short spell for the former Celtic gaffer.

The Tottenham boss has gone on to bring an exciting style of play to White Hart Lane and has united everyone top-down towards a common goal. The fans are now backing the style of play at N17 while assuring the players they’ll be right behind them every step of the way, creating a potent atmosphere that could propel the Lilywhites towards success in the long and medium term.

Ange Postecoglou emphasizes striving for trophies despite being in a development stage.

While success is defined by silverware, the club is a project, and trophies wouldn’t necessarily come when progress is still underway to match Premier League elites. There is, realistically, still a long way to go before Tottenham achieves that status under the Australian gaffer.

Ange Postecoglou, however, believes that a club with a statute like Tottenham should always be thinking about winning trophies, irrespective of which stage of the process they are in. Speaking ahead of Spurs game against Liverpool on Sunday night, the 58-year-old said (via. Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing):

With three consecutive losses and a lack of attacking threat, Spurs are feeling the wreath of young project.

“For a club like Tottenham, wherever you think you are in your rebuilding cycle, you have to try and win something every year. That’s part of the responsibility. I can’t sit here and say we’re going to finish fourth, fifth, sixth, and then in the third of the fourth year we’re going to win something. I’m not built that way. I want to win things all the time. We start next year trying to have success. But the underlying thing is growth. We’ve got to have growth.”
