England make brutal call by axing Tottenham Hotspur star from the Euros 2024 squad

James Maddison was the first name among three who were cut from England’s 33-player probable squad

As Mirror reported, Tottenham midfielder James Maddison‘s dreams to participate in the European Championship for England have come to an end as he didn’t earn a spot in Gareth Southgate’s 33-player provisional squad list for the Euro 2024.

The 27-year-old completed a decent debut campaign with the North London club by scoring four goals and nine assists in 28 league games. The Englishman also recovered from an ankle injury, which took the three months of his last season. The player also earned a spot on the Aussie coach Ange Postecoglou’s favourite player list. Spurs tactician is looking for a perfect player in summer transfer to join Maddison in Spurs midfield.

Southgate also featured the player as a substitute in the final 30 minutes of England’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Maddison was the first among the three players to be cut from the England squad by Southgate. The midfielder was named in the 2022 World Cup squad and doesn’t get playtime in Qatar. The exclusion from the Euro campaign is a huge blow for the player.

“With this group, some of them might not be for this summer, but for the future as well. We’ve evolved as a team in every tournament. There are now a lot of changes from the last Euros, and from Qatar as well.”

said Southgate after naming the squad, The Three Lions manager has to announce a 26-player squad for the European Championship, and he needs to cut seven more players from his provisional list to make the final list. He also claims that his current group of players has more attacking talent than those from the past.

The presence of midfield stars Phil Phoden and Jude Bellingham has reduced the chance of Maddison’s being in the final squad. The task is not easy for the 2020 Euro finalist boss, as England is one of the favourites to win the Euro Championship and Southgate wants to take the Silverware ‘home’ at least this year.
