Tottenham star explains his disappointment in team’s and Ange Postecoglou’s recent performances

Ben Davies has talked about the performances of the team and acknowledges that he genuinely thought Ange Postecoglou‘s first season at Tottenham would put an end to the team’s protracted trophy drought.

Since coming to the Lilywhites from Swansea in 2014, Davies has made two trips to the EFL Cup final and one to the Champions League final. Still, the Spurs ended up losing all three championship games.

Prior to Davies’ tenure at the organisation, Tottenham had a lengthy trophy drought; their most significant victory was in 2008, when they captured the League Cup.

White Hart Lane had made a good start to life under new manager Ange Postecoglou, so expectations were high. But the 2023–24 season proved to be difficult for Spurs, who lost the FA Cup in the fourth round, the League Cup in the second round, and only managed to finish fifth in the Premier League, missing out on qualifying for the Champions League.

Davies acknowledges that Tottenham’s lacklustre performance caught him off guard and that the team is “desperate” to break their winning streak. In an appearance for The Business of Sport (h/t Football London), Davies said:

“I think the thing that we’re always going to have put back at us is lack of trophies and that’s far from the want of trying. It’s been something that we’ve been desperate to do for a long time, but it’s the biggest thing that we all want at this club.”

“It can be very frustrating for us as players but at the same time you always appreciate that the club has gone through a lot of change.”

“I really thought that this year was our time, but football is an incredibly challenging industry to win. Just spending the biggest money doesn’t guarantee you the results. It’s about building that team and getting it right. It’s probably the hardest thing to do in sport.”

Postecoglou has seen rough times in his tenure

To adapt to changes is a skill that is often difficult for several squads. With time, though, hopefully Tottenham will get back on the right track to victory and prove their worth in the major competitions.
