Highly-rated Tottenham midfielder tipped to have a "top career" abandons ships to join the Tykes

Spurs send rising star Matthew Craig to Barnsley

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Matthew Craig has secured his immediate future as the 21-year-old agrees to a loan move to Barnsley, per Football Insider.

Craig has had impressive performances for Doncaster Rovers in the last season, and multiple clubs have been chasing his signature this summer. The player was even praised for his performances and tipped to have a ‘top career’.

However, Barnsley wasted no time in agreeing a deal with the North Londoners and, in turn, securing the 21-year-old’s services. Craig has reportedly already undergone his medical in South Yorkshire, and the clubs are putting the finishing touches on the loan move.

Barnsley have deepened their reliance on loan deals to acquire players this summer as they look to secure a promotion in the upcoming campaign. They failed their promotion bid last season following their loss against Bolton in the playoffs.

Is Barnsley the making of Tottenham’s next midfield maestro?

Craig has a long history at Hotspur Way. He came through the academy at N17 after joining the club from Watford when he was 12. He went on to make his first team debut for the club in 2023.

His current contract at the club runs until 2026; he signed the latest extension in 2023.

He is regarded very highly by the officials at Tottenham, and he wore the armband for the Spurs’ Under-21s before his mid-season loan move.

Matthew Craig enjoyed 18 outings for Doncaster following his loan move in the winter window; he helped the club to an eventual fifth-place finish in League Two.

Doncaster narrowly missed out on their bid for a League One promotion after a defeat in the playoff semi-finals.
