Girona open talks with Tottenham Hotspur for Bryan Gil
According to renowned Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, La Liga side Girona are set to open talks with Tottenham Hotspur to try and sign out-of-favour Spanish winger Bryan Gil.
Girona were the Spanish top-flight’s surprise package last season. They had a campaign to remember, staying on top of La Liga for a significant chunk of time and even getting the better of Barcelona in both league encounters.
The Blanquivermells under the astute guidance of their head coach Michel finished third in the league ahead of Atletico Madrid. Players like Artem Dobvyk, Savio and Eric Garcia emerged as unlikely heroes throughout the campaign.
However, as is the case with many such clubs that have a great season, the big European giants have already started poaching players from Michel’s team. Bayer Leverkusen signed Aleix Garcia and Manchester City wrapped up a deal for Savio.
The exit of Savio has left Girona short of one winger and Michel has identified the 23-year-old Spaniard playing for Tottenham Hotspur as a possible replacement. @pokeefe1 and @JaviHipo revealed that initial discussions had taken place between the two parties and this claim was backed up by Romano.
When Spurs signed Gil, many thought they were signing a player for the next decade. The North London club let Erik Lamela leave in a swap deal for the Spanish international but Gil’s career hasn’t panned out as expected.
Once labelled by ex-Spurs boss Antonio Conte as a player ‘born to play football’, injuries have meant that Gil’s appearances have been few and far on the pitch. Ange Postecoglou’s arrival was expected to offer him a new lease of life but he quickly fell out of favour last season.
When fit and in good form, Gil can be unplayable at times. His electric ability is what made Spurs sign him all those years ago. He represents a rare breed of traditional wingers who still like to drive to the byline and provide cut-backs/crosses.

At 23, Gil has enough time to resurrect his career. He doesn’t seem to have a future at the N17 but a move to Girona might do him the world of good. Spurs must accept their losses and let the player leave, for a better future.
