Spurs take a gamble on Dele Alli
Tottenham Hotspur have reached a new agreement with Everton for academy graduate Dele Alli where the North Londoners would get paid based on the appearances the former Besiktas midfielder makes, and Dan Plumley regards the agreement as an act of goodwill.
The England international is technically free again but is training with the Merseyside Blues in a bid to impress Sean Dyche & Co. to earn a new contract with the Toffees.
Tottenham shows goodwill with Alli deal
Previously, the Blues were due to pay an extra £10m fee if the midfielder racked up 20 appearances wearing the Everton badge before what would have initially been the end of his deal at White Hart Lane.
And if the 28-year-old were to sign a new contract at Everton, there would be no immediate payment to Spurs; however, it would be deferred based on certain pre-agreed objectives alongside a sell-on clause, per Football London.
Reacting to the aforementioned report, financial expert Plumley mentioned it as an act of goodwill. Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, he said:
“It seems to be that way (goodwill from Tottenham). Nobody is going to turn down money if you can have it, but Spurs are not desperate for that bit of cash that would have been linked to that agreement.
“It was pretty clear that he’s not going to be in the plans for Spurs anytime soon under what they were trying to do; I think sometimes you just kind of end up at the right decision all around as a basis of how these things have played out, and this one feels a bit like that from a Spurs perspective.”
Alli has not been involved in a competitive game since February 2023, when he was still on loan in the Turkish League.
For Tottenham, this shows the rare emotional side of Levy. He is banking on Dele finding his lost form back over immediate financial gains.
