AC Milan looking to bridge €3m valuation gap with Tottenham Hotspur for Emerson Royal
Emerson Royal has had quite a strange career at Tottenham Hotspur. The 25-year-old signed for the club from Barcelona but struggled to adapt to English football. For his first couple of seasons, he was quite ridiculed by his own fanbase.
Things changed for the Brazilian right-back when the club signed Pedro Porro from Sporting CP in January 2023. This sparked a sense of competition in him and since then, Emerson has looked a different player on the pitch.
However, the Spaniard is a class apart in his position and when fit, it is almost impossible for Emerson to start ahead of him. That said, Ange Postecoglou used the Brazilian like a joker card last season, deploying him wherever there was a deficit in defence. The gaffer even labelled the player ‘outstanding’ after a performance at left-back last season.
At 25, it is understandable if the ex-Real Betis man wants to move to a club where he will be a guaranteed starter. As per Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, AC Milan have reopened talks with the North London club for Emerson Royal but the two parties still stand €3m apart in valuation.
The Rossoneri have been trying to sign the Brazilian full-back for quite some time now. Personal terms with the player have never been an issue but despite constant talks, an agreement is yet to be reached with Tottenham.
Spurs are in no necessity to sell the player and have no reason to let their guard down when the chips are in their favour. The club know that they are holding a pair of aces and it is up to AC Milan to try and get them to fold.
A €3m gap in valuation on a negotiation table isn’t insurmountable and it’s only a matter of time before the two parties agree to meet somewhere in the middle. All things considered, this could be a matter of days.
Having signed Archie Gray from Leeds United, Spurs are in no pressing need to sign a right-back to replace the exit-bound Emerson. They can afford to play the long waiting game. AC Milan on the other hand will want to sign him in time for their pre-season.
