Ange Postecoglou waxes lyrical about Tottenham Hotspur youngster Mikey Moore
Speaking in the post-match press conference as quoted by Football. London, Ange Postecoglou waxes lyrical about Tottenham Hotspur youngster Mikey Moore after the teenager scored the club’s winner in a dramatic 3-2 win against Vissel Kobe.
The 16-year-old emerged as Spurs’ hero on the day, helping the team emerge victorious albeit in a pre-season friendly. The game was deadlocked at 2-2 with Pedro Porro and Son Heung-min scoring the first two goals for the club.
In the 88th minute, Moore got on the end of a lovely cross from yet another prodigious youngster – Jamie Donley to score a tap-in. The teenager already scored for Spurs against Hearts earlier in the pre-season.
Despite being just 16, Moore is considered one of the brightest prospects coming through the ranks at Spurs academy and Postecoglou has given him a chance to show what he is all about in the pre-season.
The Aussie tactician often called him up to first-team training last season, even giving him his debut against Manchester City in the Premier League. Despite interest from European giants, Spurs are confident of tying him down to a new deal.
Speaking about how Moore has taken his chances in the pre-season, here is what Postecoglou had to say about the teenager
“Mikey has been fantastic since we brought him in. He’s earned his spot on the roster at the moment — he did at the end of last year. He got a run with the first team because we could see in training that he was handling himself really well and that’s followed through into pre-season training. He’s been good in all the games — he probably should have had three tonight, to be fair — but he did take his goal well by being in the right areas. All we can do is keep allowing him to develop. We have to remember that last year he had some injuries and he is only 16, but — yeah — super exciting. I think the future with a lot of our young guys looks pretty promising, but it’s our responsibility to make sure they realise their potential and continue to work hard at their game.”
Postecoglou offered a word of caution about his age and the injuries he suffered last time. That said, the Aussie tactician is not the kind to be scared to throw a 16-year-old into the deep end if he shows he has what it takes.
Moore is likely to get his chances in the first-team next season. However, Spurs fans must keep the pressure on him at a minimum and let him grow at his own pace. For all you know, he could be our very own Lamine Yamal.
