Sevilla could reunite with Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon
According to Spanish publication Vamos mi Sevilla, struggling La Liga side Sevilla could reunite with Tottenham Hotspur left-back Sergio Reguilon who is out of favour at the North London club this summer.
Reguilon was a Jose Mourinho signing for Tottenham. He arguably played his best football under the Portuguese tactician at the N17. Antonio Conte came in, took one good look at him and decided he wasn’t the left-back he wanted.
Things were expected to change when Ange Postecoglou came to Tottenham. The Aussie tactician plays in a system with attack-minded full-backs and one would be forgiven for thinking Reguilon will get a new lease of life. In stepped Destiny Udogie who made that position his own.
The Spaniard spent time away from the club on two different loan spells last season. The first half of his season was with Manchester United whilst the second half was spent with Brentford. Reguilon impressed in both spells.
As strange as it sounds though, neither club have made an effort to re-sign Reguilon ahead of the current season. Now, Sevilla could be an option for the Tottenham defender who is currently earning £53,000 per week on his Spurs contract.
Is a reunion on the cards?
Reguilon is no stranger to Sevilla, having already played for them in his career. He has also played for Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid with varying degrees of success. Ten Hag wasn’t wrong in calling him an ‘experienced player’.
Going forward, the 27-year-old is still as good as they come and a move to an attack-minded system could bring the best out of him. Having a pacy defender alongside him could also mask some of his weaknesses – an opportunity missed with Micky van de Ven?
Sevilla, after a couple of struggling seasons are moving to a new project under ex-Barca B manager Garcia Pimienta. His Las Palmas side played some of the best football in La Liga and Reguilon would fit the kind of left-back he is looking at.
