Tottenham join the race to sign Arsenal target Viktor Gyokeres

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have joined the race to sign Arsenal target and Sporting CP breakout striker Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Chelsea are also said to be admirers of the 26-year-old who had an incredible season with the Portuguese club last season. Gyokeres was scoring goals for fun, having moved to the Portuguese league from Coventry City.

Gyokeres scored 43 goals in 49 games across all competitions. He is one of the most exciting number nines going around in European football. The Swede had a ‘coming of age’ season with Sporting CP last time around.

Roberto Martinez, the Portuguese head coach was full of appreciation for Gyokeres. Here is what the ex-Belgium coach had to say

“For me, he was one of the best signings in the entire European market last summer”

Gyokeres has a release contract in his current contract of around £86m which would be a steep climb for all these PL clubs barring maybe Chelsea, who frankly no one knows how and what they spend money on.

The 26-year-old currently earns €73,846 per week in Portugal. Whilst the wages aren’t going to be an issue for the PL clubs, Sporting CP are unlikely to sell the striker unless someone outright pays the release clause.

Arsenal are willing to sell fringe players in the squad to raise enough funds to sign Gyokeres. Tottenham meanwhile are still on the hunt for a number nine with Ivan Toney looking as a real possibility at the N17.

Gyokeres is a good strike but his release clause is too steep for a player who has shown his quality for just one season. Now, this is not to say that the Swede cannot replicate his last season form but we have seen players before who have been one-season wonders and nothing more.

Tottenham are unlikely to sign Gyokeres this summer but will almost surely sign a striker. It remains to be seen who is going to lead the line at the N17 next season.
