Darren Ambrose tells Tottenham to sign Ivan Toney who could help them bridge Man City gap
Danny Ambrose, the ex-Crystal Palace midfielder has told Tottenham Hotspur to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney who could help them bridge the gap with Manchester City both in terms of goals and points.
The talk surrounding Toney and Tottenham is gaining immense momentum with every passing game. The 28-year-old seems to be Spurs’ priority transfer target with the squad currently lacking a number nine.
Harry Kane left the N17 last summer in search of silverware and moved to Bayern Munich. Whilst the Englishman has continued in his own merry ways, the German side went trophyless last season. The Three Lions captain also lost the Euros to Spain in the finals.
Tottenham have lost their talisman but continued to build a very impressive project under Ange Postecoglou. The squad seems to have all bases covered except a replacement for Kane and that must be the priority this summer.
Last season, Ange used Son Heung-min as the striker. As good as the South Korean superstar was in that position, he is not a natural striker and lacks the poacher abilities of a Kane or a Toney that the team desperately needs.
Speaking about Spurs signing Toney to TalkSPORT (27/07/24 at 2:15 pm), here is what Ambrose had to say
“Is he the answer, it depends on what the question is,” said Ambrose. “If the question is, do Spurs need to score more goals? What did they get 74 goals last season? I think Manchester City got 96, so what, 22 goals behind? Could he be the answer to closing that gap, in terms of goals, which will, in turn, close the gap in terms of points? Yes, I think he will. I think with Ange Postecoglou and the way he plays – to get an out-and-out number nine. I don’t think Richarlison is the answer. So, yes, I think Ivan Toney is the better option. He oozes confidence and I think Postecoglou could do with someone like that – Toney could really work with the way Postecoglou plays – He will get chances. Add 10 or 15 more goals, and you are seeing a top-three side there.”
Tottenham are really being backed to go the distance this summer. Ivan Toney is considered the final missing piece in the jigsaw. Spurs might be working behind the scenes to sign the Bees star this summer.
Transfermarkt values Toney at around €50m. This could be in line with what Brentford asked to part ways with the Englishman. If Spurs play the long, waiting game, there is a chance that they might get a slight haircut on this fee.
