Alan Hutton expects Sergio Reguilon to leave Tottenham Hotspur this summer
Tottenham Hotspur defender Sergio Reguilon is firmly out of favour under Ange Postecoglou and has been left out of the pre-season squad. The Spaniard has spent much of his time out on loan in recent seasons and could make a transfer permanent this summer.
Last season, the 27-year-old Real Madrid academy graduate had two separate loan spells. He spent his first half of the season with Man Utd and Erik ten Hag before moving to Brentford for the latter period.
Reguilon is excellent going forward but has a lot lacking in his game defensively. The ex-Atletico Madrid loanee had good spells at both Man Utd and Brentford last season which should help Spurs find a club for him.
Speaking to Tottenham Hotspur News, pundit Alan Hutton feels the ‘writing is on the wall’ for the Spaniard’s career at the N17. Spurs might let him leave for a fee of around £15m, maybe even less should the situation arise
“I would say so. Whatever first team players that have left behind, the writing is on the wall. I don’t mean people who are injured and stuff, I mean the players who are physically fit, ready to go and have been left behind. You usually feel that those are the ones who will be moving on. “
“He went to Manchester United which I don’t where that came from and then went to Brentford and you can see there’s definitely a player in there. We know he’s a talented player, but he’s not going to play in front of Destiny Udogie at all in my opinion and you’ve got Micky van de Ven who can fill in over there as well. Ange has got options, so if they could get upwards of £10million for him, maybe £15million at this time I think they would be happy and I think he would move on.”
Destiny Udogie came in last summer and became a first-choice for the left-back role. The Italian defender is excellent going forward but also has a great recovery pace which can help him out defensively.
Ronald Koeman also showed Tottenham how Micky van de Ven can be used as a left-back. The Dutch defender had an exceptional showing at the Euros whenever given a chance to replace Nathan Ake in that position.
Let’s also not forget club legend Ben Davies. The Welshman is still at the club and continues to be an excellent squad rotation option for the left-back and centre-back role. All this points to an exit for Reguilon.
Tottenham are unlikely to get £15m for the player. That said, the club must find a way to let him leave this summer. It would be good to get him off the wage books and not worry about another loan deal.
