Tottenham Hotspur could miss out on Ivan Toney following Igor Thiago’s knee injury
According to the Sun, Tottenham Hotspur could miss out on signing preferred number nine target Ivan Toney if Brentford choose not to sell him following Igor Thiago’s knee injury.
The 28-year-old Englishman is widely expected to leave Brentford this summer. He has outgrown the Bees in stature and deserves to play for one of the top PL clubs in the world. His contract expires in less than 12 months.
Toney is one of the best marksmen in the Premier League. He constantly chips in with goals and assists. It is his creative ability that stands out for a tall and physical striker and he can pick out a spectacular pass.
A lot of the traits remind you of club legend Harry Kane. The English football team captain used to be a similar player in terms of profile. Under Jose Mourinho, the Bayern striker played some of his best football for the club.
Brentford, anticipating Toney’s exit signed Igor Thiago in a record transfer signing but the player has unfortunately suffered a knee injury which could potentially keep him out of action for a significant time.
This might prompt the Bees to keep hold of Toney this summer, even if it means losing him for free next summer. Missing out on a natural number nine might cause more trouble for Thomas Frank’s side than risking losing the English striker for free.
Thomas Frank rates his star man very highly, even claiming that he has a very ‘unique emotional intelligence’. Transfermarkt values Toney at around €50m, which is quite lofty despite the minimum time remaining on his contract. Considering the English striker’s loyalty to Brentford, we wouldn’t put it past the club to offer the 28-year-old a one-year extension and request him to stay at the club.
Toney had a decent Euros with the England national team on their way to the finals of the Championship where they eventually lost to Spain. Albeit not a starter, the Brentford man had two key cameo appearances on the bench. His stone-cold penalty gained a lot of plaudits in the game against Portugal.
