Is Gyokeres worth the price tag? Tottenham’s striker search heats up
Tottenham Hotspur are looking to sign a marquee striker this summer, and the North Londoners have been linked to multiple centre-forwards from around Europe, including the highly anticipated Sporting Lisbon number-nine Viktor Gyokeres.
The club is yet to fill the Harry Kane-shaped void in the offensive line, and Ange Postecoglou would want to have this subject resolved going into the next season.
While multiple strikes have been linked to White Hart Lane, Gyokeres is the most popular option among many clubs around Europe, as the likes of Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea also look to snap his signatures up this summer.
The Swedish international has a release clause in the region of £84 million in his contract with his current employers; the player could, however, it is expected he would be available for a cut-price fee.
Levy’s transfer gamble – Will he break the bank for Gyokeres?
Despite the Lilywhites links with the 26-year-old, former defender Alan Hutton admitted that he doesn’t think Levy would shred such massive fees on the striker.
He did acknowledge the fact that the player would thrive under Ange Postecoglou’s tutelage; however, Hutton insists that Levy would be looking to sign Ivan Toney rather as he is available in a bargain deal.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, Hutton said:
“The way Tottenham play, if you’re a decent striker, you’ll get a lot of opportunities,”
“It’s high-octane football with crosses into the box, one-twos, James Maddison and people like that, the full-backs coming in so playing in that Tottenham team you’re going to have lots of opportunities.
“He’s a guy who knows where the back of the net is, so he’s going to get the opportunity to score a lot of goals, but the problem for me is the fee.
“£80million-plus, I know it could possibly be lowered but are they willing to pay that? I’m not sure, I don’t really know their situation in terms of finances.
“Is it a risk? That amount of money on somebody who doesn’t really know the league, of course it is, but all transfers are a risk.
“When we talk about Ivan Toney and what he’s done in previous seasons, he knows the league inside out, he can handle the pressure so could he be a better option and a cheaper one.”
Tottenham cannot go into another season with Richarlison as the first choice number nine, and it is to be seen if the club chooses to go with a young player who can become an integral member of the squad for years to come or chooses his cheaper, albeit elder, alternative.
