Postecoglou leaves Son’s contract up to the club
Tottenham faced the first defeat of their pre-season against Bayern Munich earlier today, and while the game was a tough outing for Spurs, the pre-conference preceding the game was equally tricky as the Australian boss was quizzed about Son Heung-Min’s contract situation at White Hart Lane.
The North Londoners faced their toughest test of the pre-season when they faced the German giants at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, and this proved to be the end of their unbeaten run back on the tour. Spurs won all their previous games against the likes of Cambridge United, Hearts Queens Park Rangers, Vissel Kobe, and Team K-League until they faced Kompany’s Bayern.
And while the result would not prove as much of a concern for Spurs faithful, Ange Postecoglou‘s words before the game would be a cause of distress for the Tottenham fans.
When Ange was asked about Son’s potential contract extension, the Tottenham gaffer acknowledged that he will leave it to the club, and suggested that contract extensions are not his area. Ange said: (via. Football. London)
“That’s not really my area. I’ve always, with contract situations, treated them all the same. Ben Davies’ and Sonny are important players at the club and we’ve got a young squad. When it comes to contract matters, that will get sorted out at the appropriate time.”
Will Son see out his career at Spurs?
Spurs have an option on Son’s current deal as the club can extend the contract for a further year, which will push the new expiration of his contract to just a week before his 34th birthday.
The Lilywhites could definitely sit down and potentially negotiate a two-or-three-year deal considering the financial input he brings. Moreover, that could also see him retire at the club in a legendary sendoff.
All are bare talks; we will see how the club deals with the current situation and if they can agree on a medium-term contract with the South Korean ace.
