Spurs youngster Alejo Veliz set to join Spanish side Espanyol on loan

According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham Hotspur striker Alejo Veliz is closing in on a loan move to Spanish side Espanyol for the 2024/25 campaign.

It is no secret that Tottenham are hunting for a new addition to their striker ranks. Head coach Ange Postecoglou has recently confirmed the need for a new striker to bolster his attack ahead of the 2024/25 season. And Bournemouth’s Dominic Solanke has emerged as a primary striker target for the Lilywhites.

As Ange Postecoglou stated earlier this month, Spurs are thin in terms of numbers up front with Son Heung-min and Richarlison the only recognised No.9 options. The north London club’s latest interest in Dominic Solanke suggests a readymade striker is being eyed.

As far as the outgoings are concerned, it appears as if Alejo Veliz is heading out on loan again. On his official X account, Fabrizio Romano claims that Spurs are signing off all important documents for Veliz to join Espanyol on a dry loan. The loan move will include no buy option clause and the young striker is expected to be back at N17 in June 2025.

“Tottenham are signing all docs for Alejo Veliz to join Espanyol on loan, NO buy option clause included. Back at Spurs in June,” Romano tweeted.

Veliz spent the second half of last season on loan at Sevilla in La Liga. It turned out to be a disastrous spell in Andalusia as he made just six appearances from the bench for the Spanish club. Having returned to N17, the young Argentinean is unlikely to hang around at the club. He is unsurprisingly seeking regular game time which is improbable to happen in the upcoming season.

Bournemouth star Dominic Solanke has emerged as a primary target for Spurs

Serie A side Fiorentina had also expressed an interest in signing Veliz, but Spurs supposedly rejected their advances as they were looking to sign him permanently. He will spend the 2024/25 season at Espanyol and the fact that Spurs are letting a backup striker leave is another hint they will sign a new striker before the transfer window slams shut.

At the tender age of 20, Veliz needs regular game time to continue his development. The Argentinean striker is quite highly rated within our club but he is not yet ready to have a prominent role under Ange Postecoglou. As such, it is best served for him to spend a full season out on loan in Spain and gain some valuable experience, which he failed to do so with Sevilla.
