Tottenham Hotspur have been vying to bring in a new midfielder in the ongoing summer transfer window as Ange Postecoglou wants to ensure quality and depth in the middle of the park before going into next season.
The North Londoners have already lost Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and another veteran, Giovani Lo Celso, has been linked with a move away from White Hart Lane this summer. The club has signed Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall, although both are still teenagers and will take some time before they come into their own.
This had persuaded Spurs to bring in Conor Gallagher from Chelsea. The Australian boss has been very keen on securing the England international but it all looked done and dusted.
Last-minute drama
While the Lilywhites perused a move for Gallagher with Levy hard-balling the West Londoners into his valuation, Atletico Madrid went on to agree on personal terms with the player and secure his signatures.
That being said, football is a fast business, and the La Liga giants have hit a hurdle in finalizing the Gallagher deal following his medical in the Spanish capital.
There have been some disagreements between both clubs as regards his transfer. This comes after the Blues pulled out of signing Omorodion. The standoff still continues, with Joao Felix being discussed in a separate deal between the clubs.
Tottenham ready to pounce as Atletico stumble over Gallagher
While the standoff continues, Spurs can make a last-ditch attempt to secure a player out of their grasp. Levy can match the £38 million offer and push Chelsea into an agreement in the eleventh hour.
Chelsea have already booked his flight back to London, per Fabrizio Romano, and the transfer could go through if both clubs can agree on common terms.
