Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou responds to backlash over second season trophy comments
Tottenham Hotspur are set to face Championship side Coventry City in the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday evening.
Ange Postecoglou will expect a rousing response from his lads in midweek after the 1-0 North London derby loss to Arsenal last weekend. The Greek-Australian tactician has a big job on his hands after a disappointing start to the season, with just four points from Spurs’ opening four games.
Indeed, after such a poor start to the 2024/25 season, questions are starting to be asked at Tottenham, and many are beginning to think what the future holds for Ange Postecoglou. The 59-year-old was heavily criticised following a third straight defeat against Arsenal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was mocked in some quarters after he pledged to win a trophy in his second season at the club.
Speaking in his pre-match press conference on Tuesday ahead of Spurs’ trip to Coventry City, Big Ange said (h/t BBC):
“It’s amazing, isn’t it? I just stated a fact. Am I supposed to just lie or just say it never happened?
“But do you really think it’s me sort of boasting?
“It’s just confusing to me that people are making a big deal out of something. I’m not sure how I’m supposed to answer something that is true.
“I’ve just said something that’s true, and it seems like it’s upset a lot of people for some reason.”
Big Ange arrived at Spurs last season with an impressive CV. The veteran head coach won the Australian title with both South Melbourne and Brisbane Roar, and the Japanese league with
Yokohama F Marinos—all in his second season or second full season in charge of those respective clubs.
Postecoglou stated a fact after the derby defeat on Sunday about winning a trophy in his second season at every club he’s coached, which has surprisingly not gone down well among certain pundits and media houses. Tottenham’s last trophy was the League Cup back in 2008—the only competition we have won in the 21st century.

Our gaffer is aiming to deliver the club’s first silverware since 2008. Things haven’t gone well for Spurs this season but that doesn’t mean Big Ange has no right to state facts in flash interviews or press conferences. He was honest and is working hard behind the scenes with his coaching staff to help the Lilywhites end the long trophy drought.
Like the 59-year-old tactician, we remain confused as to why so much fuss has been made out of his ‘second-season trophy’ remark.
