Tottenham have made it two wins in two in the UEFA Europa League (UEL) after their recent win over Hungarian side Ferencváros.
The sailing was smooth for most of the game, though Ferencváros did give them a late scare with a 90th-minute goal from Barnabás Varga which halved the deficit his side had sustained owing to goals from Pape Matar Sarr (23′) and Brennan Johnson (86′).
Spurs did manage to hold on to their lead in the end, though, and their manager was optimistic after the game.
Ange Postecoglou happy with win over Ferencváros despite late scare
Ange Postecoglou is happy with the win over Ferencváros.
Speaking to the media after the game, the Tottenham manager had this to say on the result:
“Yeah, I am [happy with the result]. Irrespective of who you play in Europe away, it’s always a challenge. You saw with the atmosphere the crowd create, they get really behind their team and the conditions as well. So there’s a whole range of things you need to deal with.
“Obviously made quite a number of changes to the team, including putting the young boys in, but I thought they handled it really, really well.
“We needed to defend and defend well, we played some good football and created some good chances, maybe could have had a couple more and most importantly win an away European tie which I think is a credit to the lads.”
Postecoglou on the Ferencváros win, as quoted by Football London.
The Ferencváros win makes it two wins in two in the Europa League for the Lilywhites. They’ll face Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in the UEL next.
Up next for Spurs, however, is a Premier League affair against Brighton before we take a pause for the next international break.
Not a sustainable strategy
Much like the Qarabağ game, Spurs could just as easily have lost this encounter had their opposition had any sharpness about them in the final third of the pitch.
Postecoglou’s football is fatally flawed in its philosophy and is bound to come undone later in the season as well as against opposition who are able to get on their defence’s nerves.
Spurs’ football under Postecoglou will always be entertaining, but that’s a sword that cuts both ways.
