Tottenham Hotspur assistant coach Ryan Mason had been linked with a move to Anderlecht, with the Belgian side desperate to land the Lilywhites staff member in a permanent managerial role; however, the talks reportedly didn’t go well with both parties wanting different things, which led them to take leave from the table.

The 33-year-old joined the Spurs academy in a development role after he was forced to hang up his boots in 2018, and he has taken strides since. His grind has earned him the position to take up an interim role at N17 twice, where he managed 13 games with a 46% winning record.

King urges Mason to make decision on career path

Mason rejects Anderlecht offer

When things looked like he was about to jump ships last week, it was clear that Daniel Levy or any of the chiefs at Hotspur Way wouldn’t stand in his way. Therefore, his stay at Spurs comes as a big boost to the Lilywhites, as Ange Postecoglou would not need to replace him in the back room staff.

That being said, Manson’s decision to not take up the role with Anderlecht doesn’t necessarily indicate that he would remain at Tottenham for the long term. And former Spurs head scout Bryan King believes that the 33-year-old will have to decide whether he wants to remain at the club for a prolonged period.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Tottenham News, King said:

“It is up to Mason what he does now. Does he want to remain at Tottenham long-term, or is he still looking for another club to manage on his own? I’d have thought if Mason was doing well then he would move on.

“However, maybe he should remain focussed on the job he is currently doing. He is already with a big club in Tottenham. Either way, the time has come for him to make a decision.”

The fact that Anderlecht are showing keen interest in his services shows how Mason’s stock has been rising, and the fact that he was seriously considered also shows Mason’s personal desire to prove his credentials.

While he may not have moved on right now, it does suggest that a possible exit could be around the corner.
